Eighty-nine associate’s degrees were awarded at USC Salkehatchie’s May 4 commencement exercises. In addition, six Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (USC Aiken), eight Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (USC Columbia), and three Bachelor of Liberal Studies (USC Columbia) were also presented. Speaker Joe Winkelsas, Salkehatchie alum and former Indians and major league pitcher for both the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers, reminded the graduates to never lose sight of being successful human beings on their path to professional success. In addition, Miles Loadholt was honored by the Western Carolina Higher Education Commission for his outstanding contribution to the community, and Dr. Luke Laffitte was honored as Friend of the Campus for his long-time support of both the campus and the surrounding community. Dr. Sarah Miller, assistant professor of history, was honored as the 2009 Outstanding Professor. Cea Knox was honored as the 2009 Outstanding Student; she graduated with high honors, having also served as vice-president of the Student Government Association and starting pitcher for the Indians softball team.
