USC Salkehatchie basketball had a great 2007–2008 season, particularly since it was the first season for Coach Travis Garrett and the return of basketball to the USC Salkehatchie campus. “It’s really a tale of two seasons,” says Garrett. “The first half of the season we struggled. Trying to find the right combination of players at the right time, the players trying to learn to work together as a team, and all of us learning to work with each other made the first part of the season a challenge. But after Christmas, it began to come together.” And it came together in a big way. Although the Indians finished their season 16-16, they won 12 of their last 13 games, making it to the semifinal round of the Region X tournament. Danny Friend was named to the All-Region Team for the year. While Friend has completed his eligibility and will be transferring to a four-year college, six veteran players plan to return for their sophomore season. Building on that base, Coach Garrett had already signed four new players, with commitments from two more, in early summer. Coach Garrett was pleased with the first year. “All in all, I thought we had a very successful year. Now we have to build on it. My job is to recruit good quality studentathletes and fill some needs we have on the floor.” And speaking of the floor, USC Salkehatchie appreciates all the support of the many local individuals, companies, and organizations that helped bring the basketball program back to USC Salkehatchie. That included a new gym floor. The Indians’ season will begin Oct. 31 against Gulfport Community College at a tournament in Aiken.
