Kristen Smokes, a 2012 graduate of the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, completed her training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy for law enforcement. Smokes transferred to Salkehatchie in 2005 and earned an Associate in Science Degree in 2011 and then a BLS degree in 2012. Upon graduation, Smokes was hired by the South Carolina Department of Corrections where she served as a correctional officer at Lower Savannah. This past August Smokes was hired by the Aiken County Probation, Parole and Pardon Services as an agent. She began her training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in December and graduated on March 7,2014.
Smokes comes from a family that has strong ties to Salkehatchie as her mother, Mildred Smokes, earned her associates degree here in 1979 and currently is a teacher in the public school system. Smokes’ sister, Kimberly, graduated from Salkehatchie in 2012 and is working with the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Smokes’ youngest sister, Kayla, is currently enrolled at Salkehatchie and is majoring in education.
Salkehatchie professor John Peek said that “I have enjoyed teaching Kristen, Kimberly and Kayla over the past few years. I was lucky to have both Kristen and Kayla work for me as a student worker and both have an excellent work ethic. I have met all of the Smokes family members and I can tell you they have an outstanding family unit that supports and loves each other. It is easy to understand why they are so successful in life”.
