Jenni Haman, a senior pursuing her degree in liberal studies USC Salkehatchie has received a the Magellan Research Grant from the University of South Carolina’s Office of Undergraduate Research. This grant will be used by Haman to identify, repair and display artifacts at the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society’s Bedon-Lucas House.
As part of her degree requirement in Palmetto College, Haman completed an internship with the historical society in the fall of 2013. She fell in love with the house and the history that it holds. Dr. Sarah Miller, grant mentor and president of CCHAPS, was ecstatic when Haman wished to continue work at the Bedon-Lucas House. The grant will pay for some needed supplies to conserve, repair and display several artifacts. The house, built ca. 1820, holds some wonderful artifacts such as an 18th century spinning wheel, an authentic rope bed, a mourning photographed framed by feathers in the shape of flowers and much more.
Haman hopes to share history by telling the story of the house through its artifacts. She will be producing an updated docent manual and is happy to chat with anyone who donated an item or has stories of the house.
