Josh Smoak received the STEPs to STEM summer internship scholarship and is assisting Dr. Brian Lai with his research. Smoak is a mechanical engineering student at USC Salkehatchie.

During their weekly meetings, Smoak and Lai work on difficult problems from The College Mathematics Journal and American Mathematical Monthly. Topics include Integration Theory, Vector Space and Advance Euclidean Geometry.

In addition to gaining background knowledge, Smoak is also learning LaTex, a mathematical document markup language.

Smoak has successfully completed four classes from Lai during the past two years, including Math 399, Independent Study, during 2012 Spring. He presented his research result “An Identity for Exradii” at the Carolina Mathematics Seminar on April 13.

Smoak will be transferring to USC Columbia this fall.
