RETENTION & PROGRESSION IN THE NURSING MAJOR

In order to progress to the sophomore level in the nursing major, students must:

  •  Earn a 3.0 GPA in all designated asterisked (*) courses. Grade Forgiveness does not supersede this progression requirement, i.e. a grade may be forgiven by the University, however, the College of Nursing requires that the grade from every designated (*) course taken be calculated into the GPA.
  •  Have no more than one (1) science with a grade below “C”.

Lower division nursing students may not enroll in BIOL 250/250L, NURS 212, or NURS 216 without a grade of 3.0 in the designated (*) courses.

All designated (*) courses from the freshman year and first sophomore semester must be completed with a GPA of 3.0 and no more than one science or lower division nursing course grade below “C” to apply for upper division.

When ALL designated (*) courses are complete, the student may apply to the Upper Division of the College of Nursing

Enrollment in upper division is competitive and limited. The following criteria are used for admission to the upper division nursing course sequence through a competitive selection process:

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher in designated (*) courses required for the BSN degree.
  • No more than 1 science course or lower division nursing course with a grade below C.
  •  Completion of designated (*) courses in required general education and pre-nursing courses prior to the semester in which the application is submitted. A grade of “C” or better is required in all designated (*) courses.

Admission to the baccalaureate degree in nursing major does not guarantee admission to the upper division. Admission to the upper division is a competitive process and the meeting of minimum admission criteria (GPA of 3.0) does not guarantee admission to the upper division. Students who are not accepted to the upper division should talk with their advisor regarding the feasibility of reapplication. If the student chooses to reapply to the upper division, the student must submit a new application for the next admission date and must compete with the new applicant group.
